The Lovely Brothers
The Lovely Brothers
They're not brothers, though they are quite lovely... and this satirical pop outfit delivered a strong set. Surrounded by adoring fans, the mood was drunk, but orderly, and duly boosted when the pantalooned guitarist grabbed the microphone for crowd pleaser 'Vladimir'. That said, some rehearsal appeared to have been substituted for zany outfits, which maybe weren't as zany as they purported to be. Actually, the opening act, cross-dressing performance poet Rachel Pantechnicon, was perhaps more inventive, accompanying her urgent, unnerving poems with eccentric but brilliantly considered graphic designs - faux children's books, and a beautiful "missing end of the Bayeux Tapestry" - which she proudly displayed as though addressing the Pease Pottage WI. In short, this was as Fringey an evening as money can buy.
