dance/physical theatre review

Aphasiadisiac

Brighton Festival/Les ballets C de la B

If you like animated metaphor, you will love Aphasiadisiac. This talented dance quintet finds amusing and inventive ways to physically embody the idioms that dominate relationship lingo, such as: "they were glued together" or "he put up a wall". They use striking ideas, imagery and illusion in a fascinating performance depicting the art of miscommunication. The ingenious Les ballets C de la B manipulate music and movement to demonstrate unspeakable desire, suffocation, lack of synchrony and the death of dialogue and, rather than being depressing, their exertions draw snorts of appalled yet delighted recognition from the audience. Their exaggerated depiction of our innate dual urge to both be needed and to flee and hide is better than any tired cliché.
